Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) Share

Estimated monthly pension starting at age 58. Based on 33 years of pensionable service (Employer pension contributions accumulated: ₹495,000).
Special Pension Rules:
  • Service Duration ≥ 10 Years: You qualify for a monthly pension starting at age 58.
  • Salary Capping (Standard Rules): EPS contribution is capped at ₹15,000 monthly basic salary (locked at ₹1,250/mo). Changing your basic salary above ₹15,000 will not affect the accumulated amount.

How EPS & Pension Logic Works

1. The 10-Year Service Rule
  • Under 10 Years: No monthly pension is allowed. You withdraw the entire accumulated EPS fund (₹495,000) as a lump-sum amount.
  • 10 Years & Above: Eligible for monthly pension starting at age 58.
2. Cap EPS Switch Rule
  • Capped (Standard): Contributions are based on a max basic salary of ₹15,000 (locked at ₹1,250/mo). Modifying salary has no effect on EPS amount.
  • Uncapped (Actual): EPS contribution is calculated on your full basic salary. Modifying salary directly affects the EPS accumulation and pension payout.

Understanding Provident Fund (EPF)

The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is a government-backed retirement saving scheme in India. Every month, both the employee and employer contribute a percentage of the basic salary to the fund, which accumulates tax-free interest credited annually.

Mathematical Formula

\text{Balance}_{new} = \text{Balance}_{old} + \text{Employee Contribution} + \text{Employer EPF Contribution} + \text{Interest}

Formula Explanation:

  • Employee Contribution: Typically 12% of Basic + DA.
  • Employer Contribution: 12% total. 8.33% (up to ₹1,250) goes to EPS (Pension), and the remaining 3.67% goes to EPF.
  • EPF Interest Rate: Set by the government annually (currently 8.25% p.a.). Interest is calculated monthly but credited at year-end.

Terms & Abbreviations

EPF Employee Provident Fund - main retirement savings account.
EPS Employee Pension Scheme - pension share of employer contributions.
Basic Salary Your base pay excluding variable bonuses and HRA allowance.
Inflation The rate at which the real value of savings degrades due to price hikes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Under standard rules, the employer pension scheme (EPS) share is 8.33% of basic salary, capped at a maximum salary threshold of ₹15,000. This means a maximum of ₹1,250 per month goes to your pension fund, and any balance goes into your EPF.
No. Unlike the EPF account, the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) is a defined-benefit pension scheme. The accumulated EPS balance does not earn annual compounding interest. The contributions are pooled by the government to pay out your pension. If you withdraw it as a lump sum (e.g., if service is under 10 years), you receive a linear sum of your monthly contributions (e.g., ₹1,250/mo * total months worked) without interest.
Yes, EPF interest is tax-free as long as employee contributions do not exceed ₹2.5 Lakhs in a single financial year.
Basic salaries usually grow by 5% to 8% annually. You can slide the annual increment parameter to project custom salary raises.
While a final corpus of ₹1 Crore sounds massive, 6% inflation over 30 years means it will buy what ₹17.4 Lakhs buys today. Our planner shows this "purchasing power adjustment" clearly so you can adjust your savings goals.
EPS is a pension scheme for organized sector employees. At retirement (age 58), if you have contributed for at least 10 years, you receive a monthly pension calculated as: (Pensionable Salary * Pensionable Service) / 70. Pensionable Salary is capped at ₹15,000, and Pensionable Service is capped at 35 years.
If your total service is less than 10 years, you are not eligible for a monthly pension. However, you can withdraw your accumulated EPS contributions as a lump sum at retirement or when switching jobs.
Yes! If you have completed 20 years or more of pensionable service, you get a bonus of 2 additional years added to your service duration for the pension calculation.
